I was reading on WGMD that the Delaware State Police’s canine unit had a lockdown drug-sweep exercise at Sussex Central High School today. Parents were concerned about it, upset about it from what I read. I don’t understand why. And why is that ?
During the exercise, four students were busted for possession.
So in my humble Ohioan opinion, it sounds as if the exercise was a tremendous success. Props to the officers – human and canine – for not just making it an exercise, but a sweep as well.
I hope the parents now understand why they did it.

NO!!!! My daughter (who happens to be in the top 10 of her class academically) was disciplined for using her cell phone during this event. Her text to me was “is anything going on? We are in lockdown and no one is telling us anything.” I called the school and they responded by saying ” We are conducting a drill in conjuction with the Delaware State Police Department – all students were notified during homeroom announcements.
Some 14 hours after this event, I am still learning that SCHS was not forthright in the information they were disseminating to the media. I fully intend to explore this to get to the truth.
You’re not glad that the four got busted ? I understand what you’re saying, Charles…they should have been more forthright. But doesn’t the end justify the means when it’s all said and done ?
the school did not warn us of anything. they tld us nothing of a police drill until they actually came into our rooms.
and as a student i am glad the students got busted but when you search the student body and vehicles with police dogs, it makes everyone a suspect. now only the students who were said to have drugs should have been searched privately. the police took the right direction however, when you put every student under a lockdown with no warning, it can be somewhat violating.
I am a student at SCHS, and we were not told anything about what was going on. It wasn’t until we were told to exit our classrooms and we saw the dogs that we realized what was going on. Even the teachers were not told what was going on.
They had five dogs, and we were stuck in homeroom for 2 hours. All they found was 5 grams, and they made a huge deal about it.
I know that there were probably more than 5 grams in school that day. They didn’t even tell us if they had probable cause to search the school.
They did not do it quickly or orderly
and it just made teachers upset and students confused.
The school does not know how to handle itself in situations like this.
