Barbara Lifflander, who is running for the Democratic nomination for state representative in the 41st district of Delaware (which includes Millsboro, Long Neck, and south-central Sussex County), said that two of her large election signs were damaged. Her first reaction was that the damage was done by her opponent in next month’s primary, John Atkins, or those close to him or in his camp. Atkins retorted that it was likely storm damage from early this week.
First of all, why would someone willfully damage – or authorize the damage of – election signs, when it is known that is an illegal act until after the election (and even then, it’s not cool) ? I know Atkins expected to have an opponent in the primary, but why would he sabotage her two signs near Millsboro and willingly and knowingly break election law ?
Atkins said that storm damage likely caused the damage to the signs. We had a cloudburst here last night. It rained…and rained…and rained. The streets were literally flooded. the winds blew trees, and part of the main drag through town was partially blocked because of storm damage. If a storm can do that kind of damage, why couldn’t one tear through a couple of corrugated (or paper) signs ?
The primary election is next month, and not a moment too soon. Everyone assumes that, because John Atkins made a bad decision one night two years ago, he is a hardened criminal and would break election law without even thinking about it. All he wants is a chance to represent those in south central Sussex County, as he did for nearly five years.
And I continue to lend him my support.
