In the spirit of being a true example to the kids that he coaches and teaches at North Canton Hoover High School, head football coach and health/physical education teacher Don Hertler Jr. pleaded not guilty a few weeks back to drunk driving charges. He was arrested Thanksgiving weekend driving south on one-way northbound Cleveland Av. SW. He had a pretrial hearing last week, but no more news is out on the case.
This is a bad example of how to handle such a thing to the kids he deals with. Many of the kids – especially the ones he coaches/coached – look to him as a mentor. They look to coaches not just as football mentors, but in some cases life mentors. And yes, I understand people make mistakes, and I hope Hertler learned his lesson when this is all said and done. But what does this show these kids ? Pleading not guilty, going through trial…and I haven’t even mentioned the possibility of him beating the rap. What if he does ? What does that show these kids ? It shows that you can drink, drive, and get away with it.
First off let me begin by saying the best example a child can have is their parents. Growing up I saw many many parents drunk in front of their own teen children…so before casting stones at someone else’s bad decision..maybe spend most of that energy looking at yourself. I get so sick and tired of people pointing the finger at other people’s drinking..when they themselves aren’t good examples to their own children…PRACTICE WHAT YOU PREACH AND THEN SHUT-UP. People need to spend their energy on themselves and doing right and not on other people. Also sometimes people do things because they are hurting…WHY DON’T YOU HAVE SOME COMPASSION and quit JUDGING…because I can guarantee that one day you will want someone to have some understanding and compassion for you…and I hope you get that compassion instead of writing on the internet about something you know NOTHING about.
